No American library should be without this book. In a climate in which, if we are honest about discussing our Constitution, it is worthwhile to explore the best arguments for the document which are fond here in the Federalist Papers. While it should never be thought as the final authority on the meaning of the Constitution, the Federalist Papers explains the necessity of as well as the hopes for the government described in the Constitution through the eyes our Hamilton (America's first great proponent of centralized National government), Madison (who believed in a stronger federation that would create a National government that was also federal in character), and John Jay (America's first chief justice).
This book achieved that goal. I got this book hoping to learn more about the framers' intentions for The Constitution. So, a lot of time is spent refuting their arguments. The ideas presented in this book are so fundamental and foundational that I can't believe I've been on this earth for 33 years and am only now reading them. My overall sense of the book was that it was not written for a 2009 audience. Not a casual read.
It was also written to oppose the anti-federalists. I was NOT disappointed. It was written in 1780s English - using words and wording not in common use today. I know this is obvious, but that is my sense reading this book. This book should be required reading for every high school graduate.I highly reccomend this book to anyone interested in politics or civics. But, you get used to it.
- a little off MY purpose for reading - but still enlightening.
It shows how we have desecrated our constitution and are being led away from the founding principals by liberal government and judiciary. This book shows how far we have drifted into waters feared and avoided by our founding fathers.
EVEN HUSSEIN OBAMA SHOULD READ THIS. THIS BOOK SHOULD BE A MUST READ - ALONG WITH THE CONSTITUTION - AND TESTS ON BOTH IN ALL FOUR GRADES OF HIGH SSHOOL. SO MANY TAKE OUR COUNTRY'S BEGINNING FOR GRANTED, AND IT IS BECOMEING MORE APPARENT EVERY DAY.
this book gives the best insight into our founding fathers first writings on changing the minds of colonialist to make that bold step into this wounderful democractic republic we live in today.A must have for your consrvative library. This book is a great read and a great reference book to the pre constitution.
